Learner Profiles
Jesse, 28, is completing a doctorate in ecology and applying for teaching positions at several colleges. They have been a certified Carpentries Instructor for three years, and have helped teach five workshops in that time.
Jesse uses R almost every day, and is comfortable enough with Python and Git to teach them. They started experimenting with generative AI tools a year ago to write SQL queries and convert their R Markdown projects to Quarto.
Jesse has misgivings about people becoming dependent on AI tools, but accepts that most of the learners in their workshops and courses are going to use them. They would therefore like to learn more about how best to use them and when not to.
The biggest challenge Jesse faces is the speed with which AI technology is evolving, and the uncoordinated and inconsistent way their current institution and those they are applying to for jobs are responding.
